By Jamie Hamilton

OMD-Integrating Your World So You don’t have to

With 40% of all Office Equipment dealers in the U.S. now using OMD software and over 60% of “Elite Dealers” (named in Office Dealer magazine) as customers, maybe it’s time you gave them a try.

Celebrating 20 years in business this year, OMD is proud to announce to new customers its Profitability Guarantee Program. OMD will guarantee that you will obtain a certain profit using all of the necessary tools that are part of our software tools that are part of our software solutions package.

OMD originated the idea of an automated and fully integrated software package for office dealers in the early 80’s. Others, such as Microsoft ™, have tried to emulate their success, but year after year OMDS has been number one in the industry. OMD has been listed in the “Software 500” magazine for the past six years straight.

An offshoot of Modern Business systems Inc.(which later became IKON), OMD knows the industry inside and out. OMD’s record proves that once dealers acquire the software, they are able to connect with manufactures, customers, and technicians like they never could before.

Dealer benefit, But is it for Me

If you need to track inventory through your facility to your customers’ door, OMD can help. The OMD Vision package automates everything from taking the order to confirming that product has been shipped. To make things even more automated, we have launched a new barcode system that can be used doe all types of inventory control including receiving, transfer and technician car stock inventory. Dealers on the other hand, can set up service calls through OMD’s Service Dispatch and Management tool, in addition to using the inventory features. Also , dealers will benefit from OMD’s iManager software, which transfers customers a machine information-such as meter reads and in the future machine, to the OMD software.

Used in over 15 markets, OMD is for everyone. The software’s ability stands the test of time in the industry, and has grown year after year to meet dealers’ changing needs. Used to setting trends that improve efficiency ten-fold, OMD has done it again this year!

Look forward to a new OMD function that will allow sales reps and technicians to access information away from the office with two to-be-releases software packages, Sales-on-the-Go and Service-on-the-Go, available this fall.

What OMD Offers

OMD software is a windows-based, point-and-click system that integrates over 1500 essential business applications. Their flagship product is OMD Vision. Vision consists of 15 modules that give you everything needed to run your business successfully. Its applications range from Inventory Management, Service Dispatch, Purchasing, Sales Automation, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable/Collections, Invoicing, Contract Billing, Payroll/Commissions, Fixed  Assets, Financial Management, and Reporting features.

Use The Sales Force Automation program to facilitate a customer knowledge bank for call center operation. And, stay ahead with functions that keep real-time record of finances. With the Financial Management features, you can plot your company’s goal to future gain.

With all these systems working together as one unit, product can be tracked through warehousing procedures as well as to technicians and sales representatives within seconds. Accounting for products, payment, and personal productivity is as easy as printing the corresponding reports.

What if your customer’s machine told you what the problem was before your technician left for the service call…it can. OMD’s iManager in the future makes servicing your customers’ machine problem free and fast. Because,  if you know the problem before the call, repeat visits are reduced and the right technician can be dispatched. The customer’s machine is set up on a network that transfers the information to you via the internet, before the customer even has to make the call. Servicing was never so easy.

Pricing for OMD software depends on the number of users you will need on the system at one time, this makes up the number of concurrent users. Customers but the license to the software based on the number of concurrent users they will need, which will also determine future prices for additional software that OMD markets.

Some of their other products include the following accessories to the Vision package (please see the “Future is Wireless” section for new wireless products): Comet Tracker, a GPS integration for identifying service technician locations; Bar Code Scanning software and devices; and, BTA Benchmark software which will measure your business success against the association’s “Business Model for Success.”

The Future is Wireless

Two new software packages that are geared to help people on the go will enable sales reps and service technicians to access critical information on their accounts wherever they are, from a device in their hand.

Sale-on-the-Go, which will be released this month, is a wireless Java-based system for the PDA that accesses OMD’s Sales Automation tool for the sales representative. All their contacts, appointments, customers, and prospects will now fit in the palm of their hand.

Service-on-the-Go provides wireless access for service technicians. Using Java-enables cell phones, allow your technicians to dispatch and close calls, as well as scan barcodes on parts used. They can view service history, part usage, and repeat visit information. An optional GPS tracking feature can also be added to the device for direction locator features or estimating the proximity to other calls. Service on the Go will be released during the 4th qtr. of 2004.

Support Go to an OMD Show

While OMD offers dealers comprehensive software that can run their business from the inside out, they also understand that dealers don’t want to spend time, energy and money on a software they can’t operate.

OMD software has built-in application support module that can assist you with day-to-day operations, much like a Micro-Soft ™ help menu.

And if you need further support, OMD support staff are standing by to assist you with learning about new features and how they interact. Any questions can be answered over the phone, email, or simply faxing over materials that you can keep on hand with you, since OMD dedicates over one half of its workforce to customer service.

“What distinguishes us in the industry is integration and sophistication of our software. We’ve been in the business the longest and we have the most knowledgeable staff to support our dealerships out there. We understand the dealer’s business, it on certain software and programs. We are committed to customer servi ce, because that is our business,” said VP of Sales and marketing, David Nagel.

The best way to learn OMD, However, is probably at one of their seminars. Once a year, they invite their customers to an information symposium that includes about 50 topics on how to operate every facet of OMD’s software. In addition, they provide a seminar for OMD owners and VP level in conjunction with the ITEX show. From a beginner’s level to a proficient Vision user, the seminars have something for everyone.

How Does OMD Know what Works?

OMD has a unique system for finding out what dealers’ future needs will be. They have a Panel of nine dealers who congregate twice a year to make suggestions on improving the software and disclose to OMD what would benefit them in the future. In addition, the Panel reviews suggestions from OMD Customers, which have been submitted via the OMD Customer website.

These long-time users are a plethora of information for the software company and are essential to the cross section of their business, including dealerships ranging in size from small, medium, to large, they can gather what customers are using and how. But most importantly to OMD, how they can make suggestions that will help customers improve profitability.

In  addition , OMD has close ties with the equipment manufacturers in order to stay abreast of future products and plans.

“Our business goal is to increase the dealer’s productivity y and profitability. That is basically the feeling throughout the whole company, everything we do is to develop a product that makes the dealer more productive and more efficient, and in turn, saves them money. We are committed to customer service and working with dealers day in and day out,” Nagel said.

Over 20 Years in Business

This is the attitude that has kept the company at number one for 20 years. Incorporated as an employee owned company in July, 1984, OMD’s history precedes even. OMD originated in Oct., 1977 as the software development group within Modern Business Systems, Inc., which later became IKON. MNS began developing software to meet the needs of growing companies.

IKON did not but the software division of MBS and OMD was born. President and founder of the group, Paul Pierce, headed up the operation and designed the software to meet a variety fs businesses needs and philosophies. He wanted to make sure it provided the following essential applications for any company to increase profitability.

·         Automating transactional processing to eliminate the need to remember special conditions such as customer pricing agreements and priority service commitments.

·          management level exception reports which focus on areas where action should be taken-rather than providing an overload of information detail.

·          system integration to insure that all business units are operating as a cohesive unit.

And that’s just what they’ve done. Keeping up with today’s industry requirements, especially in software, is a difficult task, but OMD has prevailed the test of time with quality. They were the first to create such a software, and by continuing their principles, they have been number one every year for 20 years. Making the Software 500 list for the past 6 years, OMD is truly the business software staple for dealers. Happy 20th!
