Business Profile:  AJH, LLC

By Jamie Hamilton

In an increasing competitive market, dealers are finding effective ways to meet specific end-user needs with a portfolio of branded and non-branded compatibles.

Polaroid branded compatibles, sold exclusively by AJH, LLC, save the end-user 20% compared with OEM products and maintain the high quality expected of a trusted global brand.

“The market has proven that dealers/resellers who offer a wide selection of branded and non-branded products increase sales and gain a larger share of end-users.  Branded products like Polaroid provide dealers and end-users with a name that is recognized and relevant. Non-branded products target end-users driven by price.  Meeting both the performance and cost needs of end-users will increase overall sales for the dealer” says AJH Director of Sales for Worldwide Operations, Barry Edmond.

Dealers who sell Polaroid branded products benefit from a higher profit margin than they would get from a higher profit margin than they would get from selling OEM products.  AJH’s wide selection of  Polaroid branded cartridges for use in HP printers offer margins in the 20-40% range.  They are designed as an alternative to OEM products and are not a substitute for remanufactured cartridges.

Currently, AJH offers a wide selectionof compatibles, including 03A, 06A 09A, 15X, 27X, 29X, 61X, 74X, 82X, 92A, 96A, 98A and 98X cartridges.  In addition, they are planning to introduce copier and fax toners in the near future.

Illustrations of the packaging for the Polaroid cartridges can be seen on www.ajhllc.com  Packages reflect the signature blue color and pixel design that make Polaroid instantly recognizable.

But, where do branded compatibles fit in the overall market? Edmond explains Polaroid’s position as “ the brand of choice for many.”  Because of the mounting competition in the toner industry, profit margins for resellers, dealers, and even stores have become very thin.

“The advantage of Polaroid cartridges is that it creates an opportunity for dealers to recover some of the profit that has been lost due to competition, increase their customer base, and provide their customers with measurable savings.”

Edmond went on to say, “It’s all about offering customers choices. When you need to sell on price, sell your aftermarket brand. And when you need to offer customers savings coupled with the confidence of a trusted brand, choose Polaroid.”

AJH Began with Allen J. Howard.

Allen J. Howard was the first Toshiba dealer in the U.S.  With 40 years of sales experience in the copier computer industry., he realized the power of brand marketing and recognized the importance of a major global brand to the toner industry.

In 2001, he began and concluded the licensing agreement with Polaroid, convinced of the value the brand would add in the toner category.

Mr. Howard passed away during the final negotiations and in his memory a new company AJH, LLC was formed.  Today AJH is a $20 million business.

Senior management at AJH includes Barry Edmond who joined the company in 2001.  Edmond’s experience includes running his own company.  Copymate which he founded in 1979.  Edmond is joined by Gary Berger, the National Sales manager.  Berger also founded his own Imaging Supplies Company, Wood Pond Imaging, and has been in the industry since 1989. Agnes Tauschek is the Director of Marketing for AQC Group who also is on the AJH staff, originally from Sanyo Business Systems.

AJH Polaroid Branded Distribution

In 2003, AJH had marketing materials and promotional plans in place for U.S. and Canadian markets. They currently have distributors in Los Angeles, the U.K. and Australia. In the first quarter of 2004, they have objectives to develop more distribution sites in Europe; and by the end of the year, they expect to also have distribution in the Far East and South America.

“Polaroid is recognized in approximately 80 countries. Our objective is to build on their brand awareness and recognition and offer Polaroid branded awareness and recognition and offer Polaroid branded imaging products in those key markets,” Edmond explains.

AJH  believes  good success comes from being close to  customers., for example. Image Works, the West Coast distributor selling to dealers in the business machine channel, has 50 outside reps who personally visit office products dealers.

This personal approach and Polaroid’s quality standards assure customer satisfaction, both for the dealer and the end-user. Edmond expresses why the Polaroid brand equals satisfaction customers time and again:

“The name Polaroid is so well known and so well recognized, it implies a feeling of confidence and trust in the products. And rightfully so, Polaroid requires that all Polaroid Branded products perform in the Polaroid tradition. We have to satisfy customers the same way Polaroid would. That’s why all Polaroid branded imaging supplies come with an unconditional, no nonsense, quality guarantee.”
