Business Profile: MSE (Micro Solutions Enterprises) The Cartridge Engineers Breakthrough Technologies By Jamie Hamilton Toner remanufacturers, how long does it take you to split an HP 9000? For most, this laborious task takes as long as 45 minutes, however, Micro Solutions Enterprises (MSE) can do it in less than four minutes. MSE can manufacture approximately 4000 HP 9000’s a month, that’s more than 200 per day. So, how do they do it? MSE has developed and patented a Laser Cutting Technology for remanufacturing cartridges. MSE’s patented Laser Cutting Technologies cuts less than a 100th of an inch wide and can control the depth with the same accuracy. With this precision, no circuitry inside the cartridge is damaged during splitting. MSE’s laser is so exact that you could cut out an Avery Label, without cutting the backing. There are multiple uses for this technology and MSE is developing new uses for it every day. Breakthrough technology like this is what keeps MSE a step ahead of the competition. MSE has also developed a patented Ultrasonic Welding Technology. This patented process prevents toner leakage and maintains the original cartridge specifications when cartridges are welded back into place after splitting. “Our patented system improves quality and ensures proper mag sealing blade alignment. It also prevents bowing that can lead to sporadic print defects and uneven grayscales. The structural integrity of the new weld is stronger than the original and this process also eliminates the need for clips,” said co-founder, Yoel Wazana. Soon, MSE will use their patented technologies on many more cartridges, which will greatly reduce their already low 0.8% defect rate. They currently offer 315 product SKU’s, 59 of which are MICR toners, 66 that are inkjets and 37 of which are TTRs. MSE has always had a higher standard when it comes to manufacturing quality cartridges and these patented processes have revolutionized cartridge manufacturing. For every cartridge, MSE designs and manufactures equipment in their in-house Machine Shop. Custom equipment and tools allow MSE to increase efficiencies while maintaining an incredible standard of quality. One example is an inkjet-filling machine that was six times faster than anything in the market when it was designed. Cartridge Torture? MSE’s Research and Development and Quality Control departments are almost as remarkable as their innovative manufacturing processes. New products begin with MSE’s Research and Development Team where OEM products are benchmarked and the cartridges are meticulously evaluated. MSE Engineers believe that you need to have an in depth knowledge of the original product specifications if you are to remanufacture it properly. Once the R&D Team develops a matched system, MSE’s Quality Control Team works independently (in a different building) to evaluate MSE products. Their sole purpose is to be an in-house, independent lab to test products, ensuring that MSE products perform as stated. The QC Lab evaluates all incoming components prior to releasing them into manufacturing. By doing so, they catch vendor discrepancies and prevent inferior components from reaching the production floor. The QC lab also randomly pulls finished product from inventory for complete life testing. In fact, they print more than 60,000 pages every day in the lab. The rigors of shipping and end-user treatment are challenged at MSE with a battery of cartridge tests. Temperature, humidity, and pressure changes imitate the regions, climates and altitudes of the world. The company has to make sure if they sell product to a dealer in Alaska, where it’s cold and dry, or in Brazil where it is hot and humid, that it performs at 100%. MSE Engineers also test the structural integrity of each product. The products must undergo drop testing and survive a weeklong shipping simulation. Yoel Wazana, President, describes the process, “It’s almost like cartridge torture but in the end, I can sleep at night knowing that the product is working in the field.” Refreshingly, MSE also designed a unique user-friendly packaging whereby no knives, scissors or keys are needed to open it. This packaging was designed to make a consumers experience hassle free and easy. Every MSE brand toner also has a prepaid return label inside and can be resealed without the use of tape or glue. MSE products are also protected from freight via their custom molded foam in place end caps. Cartridges are suspended in the center of the box and completely protected to withstand the rigors of freight. More importantly, these custom end caps are environmentally friendly and 100% reusable. Service & More Service Someone will always be available to take your call at MSE. Their customer care team and sales department have matched up so that each account has two dedicated contacts to service your needs. “By working in sync, you are able to talk to someone who can make important decisions and take care of your customers,” says Avi Wazana, CEO, “Our dedication to quality extends to the people we hire. It is a part of our commitment to complete customer satisfaction.” Drop ship packaging is available at no extra charge and MSE can even private label cartridges with your logo and contact information. MSE also ships more than 400 orders every day from one of their four North American facilities in California, Pennsylvania, Canada, and Mexico. Order confirmations, shipping manifests, and even invoicing can be sent direct to customers electronically to provide tracking information and order accuracy. There are no sub-par cartridges at MSE; they only offer a premium product line. In fact, the exact same product goes into every type of packaging they offer. They discontinued their economy line more than two years ago in order to focus on perfection and competing with the OEMs. MSE remanufactures more than 75,000 toners and 50,000 inkjet cartridges a month from its California based facility, so you can fill your large orders on time. From inkjets to MICR to TTRs, black and color toner, you have 315 products to choose from. MSE also has award-winning support to back their high quality products. The MSE Partner Program has won the prestigious 5 Star rating from VAR Business Magazine for three consecutive years. This ranks their support for their dealers in the top 10% of all OEM companies and no other cartridge remanufacturer has ever made the list. MSE specialists also train customers on how to close more business. According to a recent testimonial received by customer who has been buying from MSE for 2 years, “…the tour of your plant and the training provided was exactly what we needed to give us some fresh ideas on new ways to approach our customer base. “After returning to our office, we sold 6 times what we had sold in any previous months, and I personally sold more in one week than I did in the past 2 months. I would like to thank you for your extensive product knowledge and truly inspirational marketing ideas.” “We are so much more than just a cartridge vendor”, says Craig Faczan, Marketing Director. “We are partners with our customers and we take those partnerships seriously. To help them succeed, we offer the highest quality products along with the highest possible level of support. Our resources are our customer’s resources and our facilities become their facilities. We strive to be the best business partner we can be.” Outsourcing Specialists According to Avi, outsourcing has become the fastest growing segment of MSE’s business. “As the market becomes proliferated with new and complex models, many companies choose to utilize contract manufacturing (outsourcing) to survive.” MSE offers more than 315 products and specializes in niche products like Lexmark, Dell, and Samsung. Avi added, “We take a consultative approach to outsourcing because every customer is different.” MSE averages five new products every month; however, they will never release a product if it does not meet MSE quality standards or because competitors are first to market. MSE Looks Forward to expansion Today, MSE is still expanding. They have increased their operations to more than 115,000 sq ft and will be moving to a much larger facility in the near future. “We are planning for the future of our business partners,” says Avi. “Our new manufacturing facility will be double the size of our existing building and we expect our manufacturing statistics to steadily grow at a controlled pace for years to come because everyone needs a quality alternative to the OEMs.” MSE’s global reach is strong and expanding and their reputation for quality precedes them.
