FREE TECH TIPS February 2007 Subject: Konica 7075 Question: We have a Konica 7075. About two weeks ago, we found rotational marks centered on the drum, about 2 inches wide and 3 inches long, and they wouldn’t clean off. We couldn’t determine how they got there at the time and the drum was due to be replaced anyway, so we replaced it. Now, the marks are back. We’re planning to put some drum-setting powder on the drum and turn it manually to see what’s rubbing against it. Has anyone had this before, and can we turn the drum in the machine manually to test our theory? Any input would be appreciated as always! Thanks. Answer: You can turn the drum by hand, but probably not fast enough to create the problem. I’ve had problems with the T/S, which caused drum wear. On each end of the T/S, there should be a Mylar stopper. If these wear down or off, the drum will rub. Just an idea—good luck. Response: Thanks for the quick response. We found a problem with the T/S. The Mylar stoppers were worn down, and after looking hard enough, we could see wear on the metal guide plate corresponding with the drum. Thanks for the suggestion! Subject: Minolta Di350 - Code C0070 Question: I’m getting a code C0070 and can’t figure out what’s going on. Maybe I’m resetting it wrong. I don’t know, but any help would be great. Answer: Check for a blown fuse on the PWB-A, and check for worn gears that drive the toner bottle. Hope this helps. Answer: This is a toner bottle code. The box is real bad if the customer actually turns the toner bottle in the hopper. This strips the plastic gears that run the rotation of the bottle. Pull the back cover off, unplug the two connectors, and remove the toner bottle rotation motor housing that contains the plastic gears. After you take apart and remove each gear, you’ll probably see the stripped gears that need to be replaced. After repairing this problem, if it still throws the code because there’s no rotation, you probably blew a fuse. Under the center cover, on left side, pull up the top board to see the lower board. You’ll see the fuse sitting on that board toward the center left. I think it’s a 1-amp fuse. There have been problems with different toner bottles having two tabs or three tabs. I always pull out all the tabs inside the hopper to accept any tab bottle. It’s easier to pull off the hopper and remove it from the back side. Then, I just pry the tabs out. There’s no reset, however; you have to repair the problem. Good luck. Answer: There’s a possibility that Fuse F4, located on the PWB-A, may open due to the toner bottle being incorrectly installed or bound. The code C0070 will be displayed, indicating a defective toner hopper motor or PWB-A. Answer: When you replace the fuse and reset the system, listen for any unusual sounds, like grinding or dragging. One time, I found a piece of the bottle sleeve in the sub hopper. Somehow, it made its way in there, and the code kept coming back. Make sure that everything works well before you put all the covers back. Subject: Ricoh 5206 - Color streaks on pages Question: Whenever we make multicolor copies, there are reddish streaks across the page. If you run single-color copies (any color), there are no streaks. I tried turning up the fusing temp. It seems as if the drum isn’t cleaning off between each color application. Any ideas? Answer: Did you try replacing your main corona wire? Question: Would the corona wire even cause this? Everything looks good on black copies, cyan copies, magenta copies, and yellow copies—the four basic toner colors. But if I do a blended copy, say red for example, streaks occur across the page. Or, if my original has more than two colors on it, the streaks occur. This only happens when multiple colors are used. The corona couldn’t cause this, could it? Any other ideas? Answer: Check the transfer belt cleaning unit seal. It may be dragging on the belt. I believe there’s a manual adjust on front of the cleaning unit. Good Luck! Subject: Sharp AL 1631 Question: I’ve searched all 50 Sharp AL posts, but can’t find what I need. On a Sharp AL 1631, how do you clean the top of the slit glass? How do you get to it? Thanks. Answer: Remove the screws, and the whole cover with the slit glass comes out. Did I understand your question? Answer: Do you mean the other slit glass, the one below the laser? You have to remove the whole top (scanner section) and then remove the laser to get to that glass. It’s doable, but a big job. I did it once. Answer: I had one that needed this. The copies were light on one side, but the customer declined the repair estimate. I’m glad he did. Previous posts on this job made me quote 2-3 hours, and I’ll bet it would have taken longer than that the first time out. Good luck. Response: Thank you so much for your input guys. This sounds like a case of getting the advice we ask for when we already know the answer, but wish we didn’t! It seems there’s no magic shortcut on this one. Thanks again. Subject: Ricoh Aficio 1013 Question: I have a Ricoh Aficio 1013 with jamming problems in the fuser. I replaced the fuser bushings (they squeaked) and the picker fingers. When I reassembled the machine and turned the machine on, it gave an error—reset PCU. What did I miss or accidentally unplug, or is there a service code for resetting? Thanks in advance for any help. Answer: This message only appears if the M/C detects a toner density sensor error. I would check in this area first. Answer: I’ll assume you plugged in the connector from the PCU (Photo Conductor Unit) drum on the front of the drum unit. Otherwise, start checking the wiring from the connector to the main PCB.
