FREE TECH HELP - August 2008

Subject: Konica Minolta Di251

Question: Hello. A Konica Minolta Dialta Di251 makes dirty copies, especially on RV mode (can be good enough on recto only side). The dark areas are not dark at all - almost grey! I'd want to change the imaging unit but is this the cause of the dirty recto-verso copies? Or is the fuser dead also?  Thanks you.

Answer: I have had faulty toner cause this problem in the past; check the bottle and see if it is OEM or generic. If it's the toner, replacing the IU will only solve the problem temporarily.

Question: Thanks for your answer. It's not the original Minolta Toner but a model for another copier (I didn't do it; I believe the copier had this bottle before). It's too short to go inside so I have to push when it copies! Do I need to replace the imaging unit or can replacing just the toner repair the machine?

Answer: If it is indeed the wrong toner, and it sounds like it, you will have to do the following:

1) Get the customer the correct toner.

2) Empty the toner hopper. This is on the back of the machine. The IU will have to come out to get the hopper out.

3) Replace, do not rebuild, the image unit. This way you are sure of getting all the bad/wrong toner out of the system.

4) Charge the piss out of the customer.

Answer: Especially the hopper must be cleaned thoroughly. It looks like they got toner for an Analog Minolta such as EP-1080; those bottles are a little shorter.

Answer: If you put the right toner in and run a few hundred copies, it will eventually clear up on its own. But it takes a lot of copies.

Question: Yes, the toner is exactly EP 1080! So it's for Analog only? I understand the copier doesn't work properly!! Thanks for help!

Answer: It's a charge. Do not shortcut it. Do as stated above. The customer might be angry for the cost, but after all they put the wrong toner in. Also I have never seen one of these clear up after running with the wrong toner. I have tried. Even after 1,000 copies I still have background. It could have been the toner I had compared to your toner. But do not take the chance; fix it right the first time.
