NuWorld Business Systems
Office
machine retailers, imagine a Nuworld. Imagine 10,000
products to choose from, onsite technical training, and prices
that, according to President and owner Young Lee, will beat
your margin. You have just been introduced to Nuworld
Business Systems, a dealer/distributor of copiers, faxes and
multi-functional machines.
Of his
prices, Lee comments, “People say ‘How can this guy afford to
sell these items at this price?’ I can still make handsome
money, and I put the customer in a win/win situation so they
make an adequate profit doing business with us.’”
What’s in
the Nuworld
Canon,
Xerox, Brother, IBM, Panasonic, and Samsung are some of the 31
different manufacturers Nuworld keeps in stock. “We are
not saying we can get [your product], we are stocking it in
our 30,000 sq ft. warehouse”.
Nuworld is
an office machine resource of variety. Aside from the
bigger machines, copiers and faxes, their product line
includes label makers, calculators, cash registers, dictation
machines, electronic white boards and folding machines.
“We are the one stop shop for office machines. We are
exceeding 10,000 items and often people say that we produce
anything on earth when it comes to office machines,” chimes
Lee.
You can
place orders online from their website, www.nuworldinc.com.
Use it to get pricing instantly, read product details, or find
tech-support. Lee concludes that, “Whether you spend one
second with us or one hour, you will get the bottom price.”
Or, in
essence, make the site/graphics your own. “Many dealers, when
they see… our website template want to advertise with our
in-house generated graphics”- Lee. Dealers can use their
brand name on võ1Nuworld flyers and website template to
create unity in the selling process.
Like
auto-branding options, Nuworld provides services that are
unique in the industry-one of which is onsite training.
Nuworld offers retailers a chance to meet manufacturers and
take hands-on technical classes from them.
“In a few
hours [retailers] learn what it would take them a year to
learn. [And] we train our own sales and service staff.
Our customers are informed, intelligent customers. They
know that unless they improve their [technical] skills they
will get behind,” Lee continues.
Located in
Cerritos, C.A., Nuworld’s 30,000 sq ft facility is
conveniently planted 10 min. from a UPS hub. They
provide same day shipping on orders made before 5:00 p.m. PST.
From Korea
to the Nuworld
In the
beginning, 1975, Young Lee and his wife moved to the U.S. from
Korea. “I came all the way from Korea and didn’t know
how to speak English or anything about American culture, or
social structure.”
He worked
for a “multi-billion dollar office machine manufacturing and
distributing company...”, the name of which he could not
disclose. “I came here to establish and operate for
Korean headquarters for 10 years,” he said of the company,
which he also described as “a fortune 500 overseas
conglomeration” and “something you could not put a dollar
value on.” Including his time working for the company in
Korea, he worked for the mega-bucks office machine giant for
16 years before starting Nuworld.
In 1985,
Nuworld was incorporated. “Myself and my wife, we just
saw an opportunity in ‘83, that’s when fax machines took off,
copiers were there but not faxes. We were riding on that
exploding market and naturally copier machines. Also
analogue went to digital and created more multi-functional
machines.”
Yong Lee
started the company from his own small capital; he was a
distributor for some manufactures, a dealer for others.
“In ‘83, I started with Panasonic first, and then as years
[went] by we practically became all major manufactures’
dealer, on the policy of distributor for the low end and
dealer for the high end.
Describing
the experience Lee states, “We did not spread our limited
resources. Strategically, we concentrated on what we
were doing and then expanded to the next brand.”
They
started getting big in ‘87 and ‘88, “It took a few years,”
said Lee. But now Nuworld is a dealer and distributor
for Panasonic, Canon, Brother (who only has dealers during a
recall), and dealers for Samsung, Muratec, and Xerox to name a
few.
Nuworld
Philosophy
Seize
Opportunity, Embrace Efficiency, and Provide Quality:
this is the Nuworld philosophy.
“It’s my
nature, I always enjoy the work that I do. Planning and
organizing for a goal are my strengths. When I see
opportunity I don’t mind allocating resources and taking the
risk, not a reckless risk a calculated risk… and I will go
after it with 110 %.”
Once the
goal is in site, Young Lee credits his success to efficiency.
“Hey, this is America- it is free competition. It’s how
efficient, how smart you are. I cannot help if my
competitors are not running their company efficiently, and
then they complain that we are selling at this low price.
Hey, that’s their problem.”
The
Nuworld business sense is to be aggressive behind the scenes,
not with the customer. “I tell my employees, ‘Never
chase the customer. Give them the best deal and service and
let them call back to you.’”
Selling
techniques at Nuworld take on a quality of completeness, Young
Lee describes how he instructs his reps to handle sales, “I
tell them ‘When you’ve sold something you have to service that
customer from the beginning to the end. Whether it’s
after the sale or whatever…. You have to support the customer
efficiently and pleasantly.’ When [customers] buy from us they
feel so safe and comfortable.”
“Of course
our customers know we are a very honest company,” says Lee.
“If our prices change and our customers write a P.O. for the
higher price, we inform them the price has changed and give
them a credit. That $300 they save is like a $2230,000
advertising effect. All of a sudden they have $300 more
profit on the sale. That’s how we establish integrity.”
The Future
of the Nuworld
For the
past four years, Nuworld has been recognized in the L.A
Business Journal’s Fastest growing companies in Los Angeles
County. “When you do 4 consecutive years, that’s
phenomenal. We have been doing that continuously.
And with the way it’s going, we will be able to do it again-
that’s five consecutive years!” Lee is modest yet proud.
The
company was also recognized as 23rd of the largest
family owned businesses in Los Angeles, and received
acknowledgment as a top 100 fastest growing minority owned
business in Los Angeles.
The
Nuworld staff is excited with all the success. “At the
beginning we had 2 employees, now we have 40.” Lee goes
on to say, “I tell my employees you are spending almost half
you life here, after you sleep, so you got to be happy.
We give the first opportunity to our own employees [for
promotions].
“This year
we were very happy because usually July and Aug. are vacation/
recession months, but this last month we broke our sales
record in July. Our employees are pleased when we have
news we cater food in the office. We are working
together and sharing that joy together.
Not
resting on their laurels, Nuworld continues looking forward to
expansion. “Our future plans are to continually grow,
expanding the lines and further specialize by product
category,” Lee says as he looks ahead.
“We
prepare for another expansion, 40,000 or 50,000 sq ft. so I
can provide a better service, more selection, and a better
price for the dealer. We make our company easy to do
business with. That’s how we were able to grow like
this.”- Young Lee
Nuworld
has made a Nu-impression on the office machine industry and
industry itself. Their tactics and services stand out
with fiscal success, content customers, and most importantly a
very happy staff.
